Slieve Donard Race
2008
Records are shattered in the summer
sun.
The rain stopped, the sun came out and the scene
was fitting for the 64th race to the top of
Slieve Donard and back. As the competitors took
to the line a large crowd of spectators had
gathered and were entertained by the excellent
three piece jazz group, 10 Pin Blues. Their
playing certainly added to the occasion and
gave the evening that ‘big event feeling’.

Donard Wood and The Night Of Surprises
Twenty years ago a field of 36 runners contested
the final race of the newly created Hill and
Dale Race series, a race that was won by Ian
Park of Ballydrain Harriers while the first
lady was local girl Gwenda McNeilly. Twenty
years on and against 116 others the McNeilly
name is still to the fore as Gwenda’s
brother Deon gained the victory in this year’s
race. More

Down to the Wire…
Meelmore and Meelbeg (‘The Meels’)
sit majestically alongside the ‘Devil’s
Bite’ above the Trassey Area of the Mournes.
Despite the simple concept of a horseshoe loop
around the valley over the two tops, this race
has been infamous for providing candidates for
the ‘lost in the mountains’ award.

Welcome to the New Pretender?
Is the king’s reign coming to an end?
Now 41 years old Alan McKibbin has won the past
4 Hill & Dale Championships, but this year
he is really up against the wire. The (not so
young) pretender from Omagh, Stevie Duncan,
is close to grabbing the crown. More

Canny Cunningham cruises
to victory; wily Ward is top woman
The inability of Bogboy to re-emerge and the
fact that Bogman literally stuck in a bog somewhere
the responsibility for penning this week’s
diatribe of criticism and invective fell upon
their younger and more verbose cousin, Bogusboy.

Sandford produces a blast from the
past
There is no better place to be at the height
of summer than in the Central Mournes and last
Thursday the weather was certainly doing a great
impression of the height of summer as the runners
gathered at the Hen Car Park near Hilltown for
the 6th race of this year’s Hill &
Dale Series.

Steep, Steep & Even
Steeper
168 runners braved the traffic jams to reach
the Head Road on the south side the Mournes
last Thursday evening – they came from
all parts – Belfast, Larne, Ballymena,
the Sperrins, Omagh, Armagh, Castleblayney,

Duncan makes it a hat-trick in an epic
This week, the 3rd race in the Hill and Dale
Race Series took the runners to the beautiful
Kilbroney Forest Park in Rostrevor, but behind
the beauty was the beast in the form of the
485mt climb to Slieve Martin. Some of the trackies
wimped out this week but were replaced by an
additional 28 brave new souls - where do they
keep coming from? More...

Duncan impresses in a record turnout
The 2008 Hill & Dale Race Series got off
to a brilliant start last Thursday in Castlewellan
Forest Park with the traditional opener –
the McVeigh Classic. After last year’s
161 runners (surpassed the following week in
Tollymore with 164 runners) no one really expected
that another record would be set, but it was
with 169 runners starting and finishing. Results
